He is very handsome Michelle. I really like his conformation. I will looking forward to seeing some of his foals. May I ask a silly question ? What color is he ? he appears to me to be a red dun. Though his mane and tail are more that of a liver chestnut in color it does not appear black and he has no dark points on his legs.

Desi is a red dun; I suppose if he were not dun he would be a liver chestnut - which means he would have the sooty gene. That would be interesting because I would have to guess Charro would have it, as Madonna was very light...I am not sure if the sooty gene can hide or be recessive and pop up.
Madonna had a lot of cobwebbing and not too much striping per se. Her three other full sibs to Desi have good striping on the legs (maybe not Ora so much), but I assumed they got that from Charro. Desi has inherited her cobwebbing, so no real stripes on the legs; but lots of other marks like webbing on the face, neck and other areas.
What was really interesting is that Madonna's two half Luso foals have TONS of leg stripes, so I guess when they have cobwebbing that does not mean that they will always pass it - they can pass regular striping too!
It will be informative on the two crossbred foals out of Desi how much striping they have. Hopefully they won't get the creme gene too and lighten it all up so we don't get a good idea!

Des is four and just over 16'1. The osteopath said that his growth is stunted because of his EPM, but I have a hard time beliving that one!

What is EPM? Is he going to be your main stallion for breeding? He's put together nice.

I sure do like this boy, always have. It will be interesting to see his foals. Who is he bred to besides your two palomino QHs? I have to think that the sooty gene can be masked (subdued or hiden) by other colors - maybe claybank and zebra dun. I believe that Chinny's dam, Tia, has it as she has a darker tone to her zebra dun color than the other duns I have. But she has had a very light grulla (Teanna) as well as Chinny so its only one sooty gene not two. So I don't think that sooty can hide behind grulla, or red dun but it can behind zebra dun.

He is also bred to his half sister, Sycha and to Hija (this will be her first foal). This upcoming year he is being bred to his half sister, Reina, who is also half Lusitano. I am trying to secure some fillies with Madonnas' bloodlines. I have not decided who else he will be bred to, it all depends on the foals he does have.
EPM is the disease where they get infected with equine protozoal myeloencephalitis. In a nutshell, it is a parasite they can get from infected hay, feed, water, etc. that comes from a variety of small animals and birds and is passed through the feces. It goes into the gut then crosses over the blood/brain barrier and affects the central nervous system, where it eats away in the spinal column and brain.
It is suspected that Des had it when he was a foal and it did not show up until he began the stress of training, then it was rapid. His brain was swollen, his back dropped and the main area affected is his left flank. Oh, and he has a tendancy to hang his tail to the right and his right testicle has a slow twist (he still gets therapy for that, which he does not mind!).
After the first of the year, we will start accupuncture and see what we can do, but if it is gone, it's gone. I do work him easy and develop those muscles slowly and let his body re-adjust. He seems to be a whole lot better, but still is a little "slow" and can be kind of a dufus; unlike his three full siblings who are sharp as tacks and very athletic. I don't know if Des will ever get to his full potential and it is hard not to blame everything I don't like on the EPM, but we will know better when he has a few groups of foals on the ground.
On the plus side, Des is super sweet, very easygoing and he is fun to ride. I don't have any plans for him to be our main stallion. I hope he will compliment some mares better than Charro and will be especially good to use him for breeding our fillies for their first foals.
I am hoping to get a nice colt from Charro and Leza in the next few years for our main stallion...!

He reminds me so much of his half-sister, Calista. That same color, beautiful eye and head. She doesn't have much striping either, but its because her legs are brownish and so there isn't a lot of contrast for the stripes to show up. I would have thought her darker color came from her dam. Was Madonna out of the wild? I can't remember seeing her breeding. When are his foals due? Can't wait to see them and hear about their personalities.

Yes, Madonna was out of the wild, KHMA. Desi should really produce nice fillies due to the X factor. I am hoping for a filly by his half sister, Sycha.
It will be down to the wire as to what mares here he will be bred to this upcoming year - depending on what we have on the ground...but he is being bred to 3 other mares this spring so far too.
I have high hopes breeding him to Reina (out of Madonna by Luso) for a Madonna-like filly for our program. Reina has many more Kiger charactoristics than the others by Hippo (the Luso stallion). She is alot like Madonna, with alot more "spice"!

Desi surely has overcome a lot. I wish you the best with him. Do you have any pictures of the cob webbing? I think that would be an interesting marking to have. Linda F
