Thanks for your thoughts Lynn. I appreciate them. Desperatehorsewife - Chance's mind was magnificent. I attribute it to some old Morgan blood (from calvary program) and a touch of draft. He was so easy going and kind. I would not hesitate to adopt from Coyote Lake HMA again, if we were to do any more adopting. You know, I believe that everyone one comes in contact with "1" special horse in their lifetime....(not that there aren't plenty of great horses out there)... but I believe Chance was probably the "1" in my life. I'm not done riding, and I'm sure I will have a "connection" with another horse... but Chancie was my bud! idahokigers.com/Images/Nancy__Chance.JPG

I love the old morgan look that many of the Coyote Lakes horses have; Quiet Storm had a bit of that, too (but she was small, which is one of the reasons DD felt like she needed to move on.) You're right, there are a lot of nice horses, but the real special ones are far and few between.
Storm was what I call a 'teacher' horse, because even though she was just 2, she taught DD a lot about horsemanship. Not a mean horse, but lazy; you really needed to learn how to push the buttons to get the response you wanted. Not many 2 year olds can teach a beginner to ride, but that's what I believe she was created for. She's doing the same now for her new owner.

Nancy, I can only imagine how helpless it feels to have a horse seriously colicking. Just the thought of it makes a knot in my stomach....really scares me. I'm sorry you lost Chance like that.

Thanks Linda....We've had horses a lot of years between my husband and I... and he's the first horse we've "lost" that way. It was awful...and it has made me extremely paranoid! I see a horse rolling -- and I panic! Chance had a tendency to colick...he had done it about 3 times before in the 11 years we had him...but this by far was the worst...We're blaming the barometric pressure. (I hadn't heard of that before but our vet said the thought it can play a big part in colick. He said the organs have more of a tendency to "float" in the body cavity at certain times, depending on the barometric pressure.) We heard of about 14 horses that colicked in the two weeks surrounding Chances' death. I personally know of 2 others that did. Neither one of them made it either. It was pretty strange....and awful!

Nancy, I'd be paranoid too! What a hard thing to have happen.

Looks like they've decided on Pasco instead of Odessa...Nancy, you'll just have to come a bit farther west!

Dang it!!!! I was so hoping it was going to be in Odessa -- I was starting to like the idea of bringing a couple horses and riding and camping overnight! hmmm -- Pasco's not that much further, but... it certainly isn't any place I'm looking forward to riding at !! )! I wonder why they decided that ? It has been in Pasco since it was held in Odessa - Doesn't quite seem fair ! LOL!!!

Oh, there's still an adoption in Odessa, just the colt won't be at that one. Bring your horses and ride! I don't know if I'll be able to or not, but know that Bob and Lea are planning on it (at least, that sounded like the plan.) I just don't know if I'm going to be able to swing the cost of driving over there along with the other things we're wanting to do, one of which was go down to Burns to photograph the wild herds.
