Im working with a 7 yr old kiger. Hes not halter broke and very people shy. So far Ive just been round penning him but my current goal is to be able to touch him and get a halter on him. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

sit on his hay. I know it sounds weird but it can work and if you are worried about him kicking you keep it on the outside of the fence and when he comes over offer him a bite then shoo him off. Soon he will associate you with food and good things. after he will let you feed him and touch him use a curry comb on him while he eats, the ones that have the inch long prongs that you would like someone to rub on your back works wonders for you to become his best friend. Then to get the halter on if he likes carrots or other treats offer him one and rub him down with the halter and after that he can only have on if he sticks his nose in the halter himself and then only after you fasten the halter. It will take a little while but he will associate it all with good things not anything negative. Just dont get mad at him and yell or try to smack him and he will come around. if you shoo him away just do it nonchalently like "ehh im done with you go away", just push him off and when he comes back reward him. This worked for me and now i have pocket ponies (kigers and non-kigers). I hope this helps a little. Some people dont like to use feed because it is like a bribe but i am not above bribing a horse in the beginning and once they can do it you use less and less goodies. I spoil my horses and give them lots of carrots, apples, grapes and home made horse cookies.

What I've done with all my mustangs (Kiger or not) was use John Sharp's method of poling. His granddaughter Kitty Lauman and her husband use it as well: www.laumantraining.com/content/about-usA site that is great for working with wild ones is www.kbrhorse.net/pag/train.htmlA real fraidy cat mare I had I used poling and clicker training as a combination to quickly get thru to her. Poling is something if you have never done it before I would practice on a gentled horse while longing them around. On the KBR horse website is a wild horse mentor list if you want someone fairly local to give you on the spot advice...Although with being in Oregon you should have no problem cause there's lots of experienced mustang trainers there. Like Gotkiger said, I too have had hay and thrown it thru the fence, slowly making them come closer to me to get it (decreasing their personal bubble) and quickly moved to feeding inside the fence and then from the hand. I'll use anything I can in my training arsenal and find that the only thing I don't like to do is over run them with poling or roundpenning if they are crashy...at that point I'll do a lot of release of pressure work.
