I woke up at 5am checked my monitor and Fantasy had foaled. It was freezing cold outside just 10' degrees, when I got out there I found mom and baby just shivering. We got towels and dried off the mule and my daughter attempted to blow dry him but Fantasy would get to upset. As I feared his ears were froze. So we bundled him up best we could. I watched him take his first poo' then directed him to the milk bar so he could figure it out, cleaned the stall and went inside to get warm myself until daylight. Come morning the sun is shining and it is warming up I opened up the stall so they now have a paddock to get out in the sun his ears are unthawing and he is persistant about nursing but has not figured it out yet. He bumps her and waits for the milk to squirt out and licks it up he has yet to latch on and suck. Fantasy is not alot of help she is frustrated and walking away form him squeals at him when they touch noses. I am calling the vet to come check them both out, I always do even if it's just have the vet say they are both fine. He has wonderful big ears and his daddy's face ;D I may not have got my molly but I do have a wonderful dun mule. Oh and he is super friendly he loves me as much as his mom if I am in the stall he is just as happy to follow me around and check my armpit for milk...LOL. Maybe he is not so bright...LOL. It is hard to get real good pictures he is always chasing his mom around or in my face.

I can't wait to see more photos as he unfolds. Glad to hear they made it through the night OK.

They are doing much better today. The vet gave me some banamine to give Fantasy he did not like the way she was making the mule chase her down for food, he figured she must be in pain a bit with the amount of edemia she has. She also did not like him standing so near, after all he did hold him down to take the little guys temp', first time I heard the mule make a noise. Fantasy has settled down but she frets alot, but that is the Mustang in her as well. The slightest thing that would make her upset normally it twice fold now and she thinks the baby needs to up and run with her. I am so glad I instilled such good groundwork and ground manners with Fantasy or she would be very hard to deal with if she did not consider me boss. Today we will meet the new vet she will come and draw blood on the mule. Although he was born at around 4:30 am he did not figure out how to truely suckle until 2:30 pm. the vet explained that he sees it alot with large foals when compared to the size of the mare, usually always colts or the boys anyway. He is a big mule and slightly contracted on the front but nothing exercise will not fix, he still is a bit of a drunk and wobble ears as well. You just can't help but love him and he is so freindly. He was very popular yesterday I had a friend bring all six of her little kids over yesterday and they all came in one at a time and loved on him. A few nieghbors have come around to see him as well. He has discovered he can rollover completely and thinks that's pretty neat. I am off to search for a good name for him.

He is gorgeous and you're sure to have a blast finding a name for him... Have fun and I'm looking forward to lots of pictures!

Ha! Ha! Joan, I'm on the same thought wave. I've even been looking around on the Web for a Jack to breed one of my mares to. I would love to have a Kiger Mule for a future Endurance horse. My boys will be 6 & 8 this summer, and want to go with mom on her rides. If they really get into it, I will really have another excuse to experiment.
