I spent labor day weekend at Chief Paulina Horse camp in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. It was a great opportunity spending 4 days riding Fantasy with friends. I had a wonderful time and learned alot about my horse.
Fantasy does not like hieghts, at cliffsides you can clearly tell make her extremely anxious and upset. Leaving her alone at camp is not an option she almost climbed out of the corrals when I even considered it. I had brought another green horse I was hoping to take out, she instead got a vacation in the woods. Thankfully I knew that horse would have no issue spending the day alone. After 3 days standing in a corral and riding out on the trail on hot sunny days Fantasy could use a good roll in the soft sand. Should I not provide her the chance she will take that chance while traveling down the trail. Yes she did, stop drop and roll on me. I was quick out of the saddle, but equally surprised at how quickly she took advantage of me. I let her have her head so she could walk down a sandy slope and half way she took the opportunity to roll.
I did get in a nice evening ride at a fast pace. I was very proud with Fantasy's willingness to pick up the canter freely for a few paces and it felt good. The bugs were bad and with bug spray wearing off, along with the roller coaster terrian up and down hills Fantasy's tolerance soon began to wear thin. So dang it, I can't say my horse won't buck, but I can say I can still stay in the saddle...LOL. ;D
I had a wonderful time the majority of the time riding was wonderful and my horse was good. I could drop the reins travel along and take snapshots or pick up the pace and trot out weaving thru' the trees. It was good fun and a change of pace from my normal flat land desert sage brush and juniper tree trails.
So I may owe Jeanne an apology when I said Fantasy wanted to be an endurance horse...after 4 days of riding in the woods, Fantasy just may be having a change of heart on that extreme riding on the flat or rolling hills she is all for it, those scary cliffs are another matter.
