We are in Georgetown...north of Austin. Today there were two fires (many yesterday) - one only a few miles away to the south west of us (wind was blowing hard from the north, so no chance of that one coming). About 5pm, I saw smokey haze coming over the trees on the back end of the ranch - from the north with us directly in the path. Took awhile to find out where the fire was but it was 30 miles north in Killeen. We smelled smoke for awhile but they got it under control fast. We've been watching helicopters carrying water all around us for the last 24 hours. Pretty scary stuff - hard to evacuate 60 horses...!
Our barns are metal - hardly any wood and all the pastures surrounding the barn are basically dirt with there being no rain in months so not a lot to burn. The neighbors that share our east fence line would fair badly due to being full of cedars but our place is mostly mesquite (which has very little green right now) and I guess the oaks would kindle quickly...

I noticed that ACTHA has some information on people who can take in horses displaced by the fire. I am not to familiar with the towns in Texas so I don't know if they are close to any of you who might be facing an immediate threat but you can check the web site. One of them is in or near Lampassas. Please stay safe and I hope you are not in the path of anything current or yet to come.

Unfortunately it was just announced that most likely 4 teenagers started the fire in Leander. It burned 11 homes and injured several firefighters. Luckily it is for the most part contained. Bastrop i'm thinking will keep burning for at least a week or more. It's definately worrisome to have all the animals so close. You always have to think about smoke inhalation as well. A local livestock arena were we hold the youth fair is taking in all kinds of livestock right now so at least thats an option as well.

yes this is scary. My best friends 80 + in laws live near there. and I do not believe they want to leave their place. I hope they catch those responsible. They caught the one's here in AZ. that left a camp fire unattended. Please keep alert and safe.
