I sat among the scrub and rock
Eyes glued to my glasses
Skeletal life blighted by strife
The landscape devoid of grasses
Looking for a fleck of dun
A glint of white reflection
A slice of grey a hint of bay
They slipped from my detection
The sun washed rocky outcrops
With wisps of golden rays
Formed of sun a flicker of dun
The stallion caught my gaze
In the fading light of sunset
He stood amongst brush
At play the rays set his coat ablaze
My breath came at a rush
His head held high and proud
His ears attentively pricked
His muscles tense for sudden defense
His tail he swished and flicked
He nickered to his mares
And slowly they came into view
Duns and greys, grullos and bays
Of every tint and hue
Edging around his mares and foals
He arched his neck and pranced
Atop a hill he stood dead still
And there he took his stance
The mares and foals beneath him
Their heritage was clear
Their tails long, their bodies strong
Their black tipped turned in ear
I dared not move or breathe
Though my muscles are surely sore
Body tense my every sense
Focused to my core
The stallion whirled his head
Flicked his ears towards me
A stomping foot and fleeting look
The mares began to flee
The rumble of hooves in motion
The neighs of mare to foal
With quick decent away he went
His tail like liquid coal
As darkness stole the sunset
So wilderness swallowed them too
With out a sound their departure profound
In the vastness my loneliness grew
As I left my perch
The stallion excited my mind
Wild and free as he should always be
Never to feel tether or bind
Eyes glued to my glasses
Skeletal life blighted by strife
The landscape devoid of grasses
Looking for a fleck of dun
A glint of white reflection
