I grew up in Maryland and used to see the ponies wild on the island. There were some very nice ponies in the 60's and 70's that were used as jumpers, harness ponies and general riding, but IMO they have mixed in too much Shetland blood and they do not resemble what they once did. Imagine that...man interferring with a wild herd (sorry, that slipped out). Still, it is a fund raiser and long standing tradition and it does draw crowds. The forehead slapper was the year a family bought a pony and planned to transport it in thei :-/r station wagon.

Growing up in Virginia this has always been a huge event and got even more popular with margurite henry books. Your absolutely right that they used to be some nice ponies now they more or less just have pretty paint markings. That is ridiculus about the station wagon thing but is still can't believe someone one time payed $10,000 for a foal . Even though one day i still would like to see the roundup and the horses. So far i have only had the oppurtunity to see the bankers which aren't the prettiest sight LOL.

I own everyone of Margarite Henrys books. Loved the stories and the illustrations.
