I am pretty sure that the new update is that they are not releasing geldings back out on the HMAs. So that is a small relief if they exchange the 11 geldings for stallions and mares out there.

Geldings were one way for the BLM to keep to the minimum numbers as required, but not have breeding stock. Its a way to slow down births without doing PZP which has been shown to wreck havoc on the stability of the herds. The mares would keep coming into heat over and over and over, but couldn't conceive. So the stallions continued to fight all spring summer and fall.
