Hi, Sorry we don't have pictures yet but in light of the gather dates being announced we wanted to let you know what we observed.
Every horse we saw was fat and shiny and we saw 20-40 total. They looked great! I saw the tallest Kiger I have ever seen with one of the longest heads ever so I hope that one is gathered. I want a closer look. The largest band we saw had about 20-25 horses but it was close to dark so I can't give you the color breakdown for sure. We did see foals with them and we know there are some nice grulla mares with foals. We saw small family bands of 3-7 horses.
We saw a horse carcass with bear scat nearby which reminded me that even though we have never had an issue with predators, they exist.
The range is green, green, green and all the water holes and resevoirs are full.
For those of you who know or have been to the Round Barn - part of it has about a foot of standing water in it. The lake nearby - some call Barton Lake extends from it's normal banks almost to the Round Barn. Standing water along side the road at mile marker 14 headed out of Burns is up to the third strand of 4 strand barb wire fencing.
The roads were like driving in snot - sorry but that is as close as we can come to what it was like. Not like ice where you slide along the top, or water where you plow through. If the rains are over, the roads will dry out enough. In the dry season, the roads are silt covered.
We will be out there for the gathers. Any one else coming to observe? We were not given permission to follow a horse through the process from the time they arrive at the corrals as we had hoped, but we will be able to film them in the corrals so we will film for the documentary and to post here.
