My kiger mare Springtime surprised me this week. I was trying to get the icycles off of my little donkey's face over his eyes. Cola hates to be touched at all when wet even though he has on a waterproof blanket. Otherwise he begs for rubs, hugs and kisses and loves to cuddle. So he was trying to pull away from me, and I was tryng to hold on to him. Spring, stopped eating her favorite 2nd cut hay and came at me with her ears pinned back and her head down. I puffed up and took a stomping step toward her with a firm No and she went around the other way and tried again with the same result, then returned to her haypile, but stood there to watch me. She was protecting her little herd mate from my attention that was making him mad. So while I had to put her back in her place, I was proud that she was just taking good care of her little herd. She is an awesome mom! She probably didn't know what I was trying to make him more comfortable.
Spring spent a few weeks at my daughter's house when her last filly, Chica was weaned. Lisa had tied her goat out and he tangled himself and went down and gave a distress cry. My daughter was a distance away in the yard, but as she ran toward the goat, she saw Spring trot to the goat and nudged him until he got up releasing the pressure on him. She is a smart mare and looks out after her herd. Spring gained a lot of status in Lisa's eyes that day.
