My little girl has hit her 4 year old "teenage" year. Apparently she's hit it in full force. I have been away, and she's in heat. She's biting her handlers, and starting to think about pulling back when tied. This is unlike her in about every way. Suggestions?

Just go back to the ground training and manners that were successful for you before. If she had them before, she just needs a reminder the rules still apply. If she is going to have other handlers they will need to be a part of the training as well, so they know how to properly correct her and keep her on track. I don't allow my mares to use being in heat as an excuse for bad behavoir. I am aware they are in heat and may be distracted, but good behavoir is must at all times.

I'd also review giving to pressure if you think she's going to start attempting to pull when tied......and be careful what she is tied to and what type of halter you are using too....anticipate her pulling that is....
Good luck...I think they all go thru the bratty teenage years....

Thank you. I figured this was what I was dealing with and what I needed to do but it's nice to get a second opinion. She's been a great little mare with really good behavior. I have limited her handling with others at this point, and my trainer knows what I want in her disipline. We just may need to go to some back to the basics with the trainer, too. I have not had her rope halter on, but am planning on using it again. She knows pressure and release much better with that one.

If that doesn't change her attitude and it likely will, consider gastric ulcers, it can cause sudden unexplained behavior changes in an otherwise pleasant horse.

How much turnout is she getting? I know Chinook got cranky at a barn where they just had them out of an hour or two, and sometimes not even that.

I will ask. She has been in pasture full time. I don't think they are pulling her in. The barn manager was just putting her blanket on last week and she bit her, and my trainer went to reach for the girth and she tried to get her. She tried to spook and act like she was going to pull back over the saddle pad, and I know from riding her myself that she's not focused at all.
