Victoria is nearly 9 months pregnant and I noticed that she has some odd muscling starting to show up where her gaskin is and above it. She appears to be having some slight indentation above her pin bone and excessive muscling on only the left gaskin. I am thinking that the heavier muscling on the left gaskin is likely due to how she sleeps when she lays down in order to support herself relatively comfortable as I remember this happening back in 2005 when she had Doña. I heard that dimpling is a classic sign that the mare will be foaling soon so I am wondering if it is normal for the muscle there to start changing slowly two months out? This is her fifth foal and I have heard that the more foals that mares have the more of a classic presentation they will have during the pregnancy and when they foal. She has no indentation on her croup and it is as squishy feeling as it usually feels. So, I don't think that she is preparing to abort as her ligaments have not relaxed. She also has some swelling that is more hard feeling right in front of both of her udders. I squished them a little and Victoria didn't seem very pleased that I was doing that as she backed up so I couldn't touch them (she could hardly care less normally about me touching her ... well anywhere). I was hoping that perhaps it was a bit of edema, but after lunging her for 20 minutes there was no difference in the size or firmness. Is her body just preparing for the delivery in 2 months? She is very much a fat looking mare right now in regards to her stomach (she isn't fat or anything in regards to just her). Her weight right now would be at a show weight.
Any thoughts from you breeders out there??
