A repeat performance from Dibs when we visited the South Steens this past weekend. He was among a small bachelor band of five that met us as we climbed the hill last Saturday. Katie was happy to see her old friend, and from the looks of things? He shared her feelings. Horses on the Steens are looking good, as usual. Grass there is more abundant than in many areas; one of the reason's the South Steens horses often get left an extra year between gathers, so that other areas that are suffering from drought can be brought in (Coyote Lakes and Beaty's Butte, for instance.) The red dun below was part of the bachelor herd. The following day we drove out to Stinkingwater. What a difference in terrain! How these horses survive is beyond me. Lava rock was everywhere beneath our feet. If you looked out toward the horizon, it would appear there was vegetation, but in reality, this was dry, barren, sparse country. "Blue", a South Steens stallion, has been sporting a battle wound for several months now. Honor and his band on SS: I just may need this filly. Need is the right word, isn't it? All in all, we spotted roughly 60 mustangs up on the Steens, and about 15 at Stinkingwater. And as we'd traveled down in our little red car, no horse trailer following, Mike was pretty sure we'd not come home with a horse. Why, oh why, does he think these things? Lefty is his new black and white pinto ;D

Its like gravity, you can't fight it. Besides Lefty WANTED to follow you home, it was just all those fences in his way.

Fun pictures! And oh boy would I have goose bumps if I got that close to a wild mustang!
