greetings all! I have a 13.2H Kiger gelding that I am looking for a headstall for...do most of you go with a cob/arab size, and if so are there any out there that are just good working tack...without fancy flowers, colors etc. Thanks in advance....Tammy

Tammy:
My Kiger gelding and mustangs all take regular horse size headstalls....No dainty heads there...even the smallest of mustangs (13.2) is an horse size, and her head is nice, but not tiny. I have some fancy stuff, some nice made Amish working headstalls, or the Weaver leather tack you can buy online mostly seems to be ok...I hate ordering leather stuff online, I like to feel it and look at the stitching and make sure it's solid...

I agree that horse size is what my Kigers wear as well. I had to return several headstalls when searching for the right one for Fantasy because her throat latch is so big. So you may want to take some measurements with a fabric tape of his head and take it with you into the shop when looking at head stalls.

Have the opposite problem...Amigo wears a lg Hanoverian bridle with the holes nearly open the whole way!Unless your kiger has a really tiny head a regular horse size should be best. The brow band needs to be wide enough to not pinch the ears.Lots of tack shops on-line..horse.com is 1 with a lg variety on prices & styles. The right size bit is equally important so be careful with that as well.

I use a one ear or two ear headstall as I had the same trouble with the browband being too tight. Also there is a great three piece snaffle bit I got at horselovers.com 5-127178 JP Bits by KORSTEEL - Eggbutt with Copper Oval Link. It doesn't have the nutcracker action of a regular snaffle and young horses especially seem to like it.

Hi Tammy! good to see you on here. As I recall, Jamie had trouble with all of her regular horse sized headstalls not fitting him. an arab headstall will likely work for him. most of mine wear arab/cob sized halters and headstalls. The regular horse sized have just been too sloppy. I do have one that is VERY adjustable, similar to what John Lyons sells. It is plain and well made with harness leather, and can fit almost any size head. when you get a chance, post a picture of him on here for everyone! Kim

Dianne,
I just bought that bit for Fit for Christmas. He has not been overly fond of bits so far and we train in a side pull some days, but he seems to accept this bit pretty well. The other snaffles have been good bits with copper inlay or sweet iron and we tried to be careful on the width, but he spent a lot of time mouthing them. I was ready to try a roller bit, thinking he might need something to occupy him and this latest one may work. I ran into the browband issue and switched it our for a wider one that didn't try to squish his ears.
