Since a lot of people love Steens kiger I was wondering what peoples' experiences are with him and his offspring. Is he famous through Sundance and Silverado or are there more reasons? This could be a fun thread to read, since a lot of kigers trace back to him. Pictures would also be great to be able to compare his kids and grandkids.

My mare, Lakota, is a Steens Kiger daughter and Bella is the grand-daughter. They both come from Steen's Kiger and Dakota (dam) bloodlines, from Rick's herd. I can see so many similarities in my 2. I'm very pleased with my 2, they have the willingness that I love and the calm temperments! I've only had one other kiger, so can't really speak on other bloodlines, but I do LOVE the Steens kiger lines! All of his offspring that I know of, seem to have the same traits. There are plenty of pics on here of my 2 in other threads!

SK certainly had lots of foals up until several years ago. I understand that he is no longer breeding. Sundance and Silverado were the most prolific stallions out of him for sure, and probably for the breed. They were both out of the mare, Mestena, who died in labor about eight years ago. Sundance is gone now but Silverado is likely still breeding, although not much. I know at least one Silverado weanling that sold for $7,000 in about 2002. That was before it was understood that it was the grey gene at work in the claybanks he produced.
If you go to my webshots albums you will see Cedar Creek, who is a SK daughter. Her foals out of Chinook are Tyee, Zuni, Mesa, Bravo, Prairie and Bella. Out of Steens Vaquero is Lark.. Both Tyee and Bravo look a lot like SK I think. There is a thing in breeding called the maternal grandfather effect, saying that mares will throw foals that resemble their sires. I see that in Cedar's foals. I can't speak for SK foals in general, but I know Cedar had this little trot that was much improved in her foals by crossing her with Chinook. That's the only thing that needed improvement in my book. Sedona is a SK granddaughter and you can still see the beautiful head that this line throws. I love the way it crossed with Chinook, who a couple people called "old Andalusian". We got his size and substance with that wedge shaped head. There are three "types" of Kiger that I see: the Sorraia, like Smoke; the old Andalusian like Chinook; and the type that SK threw, don't know what to call it as I haven't seen that head in any other breed. To see the pictures on webshots go to canyoncreekkigers.com and click on photo albums.

Yea you're right Dianne, Lakota has a short choppy trot that's rough!! I see a different trot in Bella, hopefully will be smoother but Lakota's personality makes up for anything lacking!! I believe Rick said that Steens Kiger got kicked in the private parts by a mare which is why he can't breed anymore, if I remember correctly, don't quote me on that.

I really like Dolly! She looks like a smart one (look at that chin)! I can't think of a grey Kiger that I didn't like. Maybe they are all out of Silverado. I have always thought Chisolm was a particularly handsome Kiger. I can see SK in Donner's colt. He looks to be a very nice horse, too. There is definately a family resemblence with Donner's colt and my SK grandson, Bolero, who is by Sundance, Donner's half brother. All my photos are old, but will try to get hubby to take some this weekend. I also have a SK great granddaughter, Chica Bonita. She has a different look. Has her mama's head. My daughter has a SK daughter, Miley, and she has SK's head and compact conformation, and a pure alpha mind, smart as a whip, and a will of steal. While she is good with Lisa, she is not personable like my SK line, but she had a ruff beginning before Lisa got her. There are photos of Sundance and of Bolero in this Stallion category under Sundance.

Dollie is a very smart girl. Chisom is beautiful as well. The lady i bought Dollie from had Chisom as well and sometimes she couldn't tell the difference between the two. I haven't seen Diego in a little over a year so it will be interesting to see how he has matured in the last year. He was bred to two mares this year and i think he was gelded. I cant wait to see those babies. Both Bolero and Sundance are gorgeous as well. Who is Bolero out of?

Bolero is out of my mare Riddle Mountain Springtime, as is my other mare, Chica, by Lonestar (another Sundance colt), who I think is outstanding.

OOOPS. Sorry, my mistake. I thought all three were out of Mestena. Thanks for letting me know! I corrected it in my post as I don't want to misinform someone.

Not all grey Kigers are out of Silverado' but I bet most trace back to Mestena in some way shape or form. Fantasy is out of Big Indian, a stallion that is no longer with us and son of Little Indian and Mestena. As for Steens Kiger he was the frst Kiger Mustang my daughter rode, when she was just a young child. At a local event kids under twelve were allowed to line up and take turns getting pony rides. When I would visit SMKR I would always make a point to say HI to Steens Kiger he was a very quiet and calm stallion. Even though he was surrounded by other horses and stallions. I still drive by the ranch now and again, I do hope all is still well for Steens Kiger. I know he was much loved.

My mare, Madonna, came off the Kiger HMA and she was a "greybank". She could have been related to Mestena some way; maybe a granddaughter or related half sibling somehow. Although, Madonna and some of her kids, have the same look in thier eyes as Argo (the older grey Kiger stallion from the last adoption).

Dianne and angelsdream- do you think the choppy trot came from Dakota's influence or do other SK offspring have it? I just made the connection, aren't Lakota and Cedar full sisters? And now Angel has Cedar's daughter! Small world lol.
lindad- I can't wait to see pictures of Bolero!

Glad to have you caught up Sarah! Yes, Dakota and Cedar are full sisters. There's a couple more of them out there too. Chisolm is 3/4 brother, being out of Dakota and Silverado. I don't know about the trot since Cedar is the only SK kid I had, part is training too to teach them to extend a bit. Most Kigers love the trot and can do it all day long. Since the ground on the HMA there is so rough and rocky the shorter stride trot works well. Cedar's was kind of a dink, dink dink. Lark trotted on her toes as a weanling. Chinook's favorite gait is the canter, he'll do it even for short distances. Quil has an amazing flowing trot, probably from Calista.
