What is the schedule for worming foals? I've read once a month or once every 6 weeks until 1 year of age, and also, what do you worm with?
Thanks, Angel

I do once a month, starting at about four months old, until they are a year old. I rotate between pyrantel pomanate and fenbendazole. The pyrantel pomanate targets the roundworms, which is the main one with babies. I find that the brand "Strongid" does not work as well as some of the other brands (maybe the carrier or maybe the worms are resistant to it).
Personally, I don't use any ivermectins until over the first winter, like january or february. Mainly because we have nightshade all summer and fall and it reacts toxically with ivermectin if they ingest it.
I stay away from Quest until they are two and the other harder dewormers...stick with the milds for those first years.

Thanks Michelle. Do I need to be concerned if I worm Lakota and him at the same time? Will she pass on the worming medicine to him? Don't want to over dose him. It's time for her to be wormed again so am doing research on worming both.

Usually I deworm the mares at least two weeks either side of the foal because the medication does go through the milk.
