Officially due June 22, but should be literally any minute now! She shaped up quick and has kept us up the last three nights. Last year, she had her first foal a week early and waited until the middle of the day when I turned her out. This year I am hip to her and being she is so early, I want to make sure everything goes smoothly, so no out for her! She has been going in the small grass pasture next to the barn, but yesterday a water leak sprung in there, so too much standing water for me to be comfortable for her to foal out in; though I know she would drop that baby as soon as I let her out! This evening I'll let her in the big covered pen in the barn to waddle around in, but she is really wobbly in the hindend and stumbling all over her stall - I don't think she has slept much in the last two days (at least not overnight when I'm watching her on the monitor!). Here are picts from just an hour ago: Not only wax on her teats, but milk droplets too! The small white dots are calcium crystals...

From what I have read so far, bays do not have the silver inside the upper legs or the black necks - browns do. I am thinking she will end up black looking when it is all said and done. Nesas' first filly, Luna, had the light muzzle when she was young, but it wound up dark when she shed her foal coat. Heres' one of her dry this morning:

Yep, that is interesting, but I do think you're right about the light muzzle changing to dark. I have seen several do that. She is precious and has sure gotten cleaned up, she's so shiney!

Her color doesn't match any of our TB bays that we have had, so I am guessing that she is something else too. Her legs are really dark. Ours typically don't have any black until they shed out. Does she have a dorsal stripe? This one will be interesting to watch and see how she sheds out. You can see all of the bay babies we have had this year at this link www.west12ranch.com/foalsof2010.htm She has to be something different.

I don't recognize this color either. I did see a lot of browns at the last adoption so I'll bet you are right on the color Michelle. What a great looking filly she is, can't wait to see more of her in a couple of days. How dark did Luna end up after her foal coat? Is Nesa recovered from her foaling?

another filly ;D Congratulations! she is a big beauty and very interesting foal color indeed on a horse, with longer ears she would resemble Super as a foal.

Dang it Dianne...I thought you'd have some words of wisdom on the color! I've posted her picts on a few color boards and no one seems to know either. Guess we'll have to wait and find out! I found the place that does the brown test, so I may do that just to confirm. Nesa is doing great, I think they both slept most of the day yesterday. The filly is sweet (think I may call her Kahlua), but Nesa is not thrilled with me getting to close to her yet. Last year she was in a 30x30 pen inside the barn with Luna, so she could easily take her away from me; in the stall she is limited plus the baby wants to come over - makes for a cranky new momma! I think it took her about a week with Luna to be okay with me. Tiffany, funny you said that - I thought she sure looked like a little mule at first!! Picture of Luna, Nesas' filly from last year, that I took the other day. I am thinking now that maybe Nesa won't be able to have any grullas...stinks because I really want to use her and Charro for a jr. stallion and would love to have a grullo...

Can't see pictures on my work computer, dang. Will look tonight. The foal will be really dark, whether brown or black looking. Since you are having the foal tested for color you could get Nesa tested as well...its always interesting to see, espeically if you'd like a grulla. Nesa reminds me of Chinny's dam, Tia's color, dun but with a little smokiness something. Funny that Tia could hide the sooty gene so successfully and then there are the dark duns. So why isn't Tia dark dun? Maybe there is something to do with one or two dun genes and the sooty gene. Its a mystery.

Thanks for posting those picts Lisa...I was actually thinking of Lovely when Kahlua was born. I am going to get Nesa tested first to see if she is homozygous for the bay and if the brown shows up.

Congrats on all of your bouncing baby girls. What an interesting color Nesa's filly is, as soon as I saw a pic on your blog I decided to take a look at a book I have by Dr.Philip Sponenberg and see if I could find any horses that resembled her color.I found one that was labeled as a coyote dun that I thought looked a little like her,but you never know how foals will look once they shed out.I can't wait to see all of your babies out at the barn,I'm absoulutely smitten with Casey what a looker!
