;D Finally got Mr. Bravo on cows this past Friday. I would've preferred to start him in a clinic/lesson environment where we could spend more time going slow, etc... but when I heard about a place that did practice cow sorting runs that we could attend, I thought--why not? I didn't realize they would hold us newbies to the 1 minute rule, though!! So I thought--well, great--we'll spend our $5 a run and get maybe one or two cows... just to be safe, I told Bravo that cows taste like apples (he's very fond of apples). Well, our first run we got 7 cows in our minute!! That is really good! He even tried to take a bite out of one's butt, just to see if I was playing with him, ha ha.
For those that aren't familiar with cow sorting--there are 10 cows numbered 0-9. The announcer calls out a random number--say 5--you find the cow with a 5 and seperate it from the others, and send it over to the other side of the arena. Your "gate" (it's just a gap, not a gape) person helps to keep that cow on the other side. Then you find #6, and #7--you have 1 minute to get all 10 in order. If you ride in a team you'll switch off between gate person and sorter to save time, but since I was by myself the guy running the practice worked gate for me.
So we did 6 runs and got 7 twice and averaged 4-5 on the other runs. Which was as good as anyone there. Bravo was great!! If anything, I'm the one who needs help with finding the best angles to move the cow. We'll be going again soon and hopefully I can get some pics! :-)
Our next big adventure is a camping trip to Loco, OK for a two-day competitive trail ride with ACTHA. On Sunday they are having some sort of Guiness Book of World Records thing that we will be a part of and this place has a pond that you can ride your horse in for a swim--so looking forward to doing that :-)
When I look back the past couple of months and all Bravo and I have been up to it is crazy!! We've gone on lots of trails, a competitive ride, an ABRA show, we've ridden down the road several times, cattle sorting, obstacle practices-- he doesn't even question my crazy plans AND he handles it all as if he's done it forever. Not to mention what a joy he is to just hang out with.
