Last week La Ponderosa died! He was 6 years old and healthy in outward appearances. At 2 pm he was alive, grazing and looked totally fine. Two hours later he was dead. We think he either had a heart attack or an aneurysm (blood clot). He was very sweet and loved to be kissed on the muzzle.

Good glory, you must be completely devastated!!! That's a horrible thing to go through with an old horse, but when they are young like that... well, there aren't words to accurately describe how torn up you must feel. My heart goes out to you and your family. I'm SOOOOO sorry. --Carol

We are sorry for your loss. It just isn't the news you expect about a six year old.

So sorry to hear this, Kev and Lisa. Such a shock when it is very unexpected. Its a hard thing to deal with, you have all my sympathies. He was a beautiful looking horse. Was he an adoptee or one of your babies?
Just for everyone's information and consideration, usually the nearest vet school will do a necropsy for between $60 and $175, and you can find out what the cause of death was. Based on what it cost to get the rendering truck here to remove my old TB/QH mare that had been shot a few years ago, it would have been cheaper to have the vet school in Corvallis do a necropsy -- the hardest part is transport there.
Again, sorry for your loss.

I am so sad for you. I know you love and are so devoted to your horses, that you must be devastated. I know that he had a wonderful life living with you. Ponderosa is a good looking horse. Are there any poisonous plants or snakes that he might have come into contact with? Check his muzzle as that is where they get bit if they meet up with a snake usually or else his legs. You know our hearts are with you.

Diane, He was out of the 2007 adoption 8207. We have no poisonous snakes or plants. He was buried on ouor property, but It would have been extrememly interesting to know what he died from.

I'm so sorry to hear this! He was one of my favorites. Such a beatuful and smart boy. It really is a tragedy to lose one that young. He can't be #8207 though... that is Tesoro's necktag number. I have it hanging on my wall, lol.

I am so sorry to hear this! At least it wasn't a long drawn out illness that caused a lot of pain. It's just so hard when there is no warning and it is a perfectly healthy horse. Just makes you not want to take anything for granted in life. Hopefully, the rest of this year will be nothing but good news for you guys. You will be in my prayers.

Just got home from vacation...Lisa and Kevin I'm so sorry to hear about Ponderosa! I remember how excited you were to get him. Any horse that has a home with you is so very lucky. I'm sorry you lost him so young.
