Due to working with the new vet from the facility I use for the first time and some messed up communication, I did not find out until Monday from the blood test they took the Thurs, before that Fernando needs plasma. It seems he did not get Fantasy's immunities passed on to him thru her milk with his late nursing, his IcG levels are way under 300 and they like to see them above 800. So tomorrow morning he will get his plasma, a 1/2 an hour with an IV. It is a whole new experience for me as I have had horse foals slightly low but with the vets advice have chosen not to give plasma, because they were not low enough to cause great concern that their own immune system would kick in soon enough. I need Fernando to be healthy and strong in a month he will leave here with his mother to the breeders farm. There are lots of horses coming and going there, he needs a good immune system.

Sorry to hear that Tiffany...always hard with the little ones when you have to deal with stuff like that. Let us know when he is home safe and sound and everything went well!

Wow that was work... the vet actually came here and did the procedure. Still it took three of us even with the help of a little sedative. He is a tuff little mule it took two tries, a hour and 1/2 to deliver the full bag of plasma so both sides of his neck have shaved patches. But once he settled in to the procedure all went well and he was good boy..he just put up the good fight in the beginning. Now he is taking a much needed nap and it is a nice day for a mule to nap in the sun. I am tired too and just might need a nap as well. I was very proud of Fantasy she was a concerned mom but did well and stayed out of the way causing little worry.

Bet you are relieved to have that behind you. What a worry that must have been even though he's big and strong. You both deserve naps!

Oh yes..I am very glad it is over and now we can go back to people being more pleasant around him, rather then holding down and poking him. With his personality though I hardly think the incident has left him thinking all people are bad.

I have had this happen to me once. Thankfully it's a simple procedure Well as long as you can keep hold of 'em! Mine got the shivers during her transfusion. The Vet told me sometimes pumping in all the fluid so fast cause them to chill a little. But she was fine afterwards. I was told that IF my filly ever had an accident and needed blood for some reason that it was imperative the treating Vet know. I can't remember "why" but seems to me it was information of mortal importance that should be passed on to new owners. Mind you this occurred 10 years ago...so my mind may be failing me...but do ask your vet and if she looks at you like you've lost your mind...just blame me lol

He's such a handsome fella! You really should put a bow tie on the front of that bandage (LOL). I think you're right about his getting over it quickly.

I did go take a nap and was awoke by my daughters half Kiger Cleo, who is sharing the stall next door to Fantasy and Fernando, still recovering from her surgery. Cleo was just a screaming and I look out to see that as tired as I was I never locked the panels to Fantasy paddock and her and Fernando were taking a tour of the yard. Terribly upsetting all of the horses. It seems after Fantasy finished eating all her hay she went looking for some more and found the lawn out front. Well her horse friends narced on her and I went out and gather her up and we headed back to the barn this time I made sure we were locked in secure. Tomorrow it is supposed to be warm and sunny Fantasy will finally get that bath she has been itching for. Should be fun to see what Fernando thinks of that.

I felt so bad all day yesterday he wanted nothing to do with people or me. He also got his first real good hard smack on the bottom for an attempt to kick me, while I was removing his blanket. Fernando would just turn and walk away, I could hardly blame him. Because of his earlier halter training he would allow you to walk up to him put on his halter, but it is just not the same as entering the paddock and having him come run up to you to say HI! I always put his halter on when I turn him out in the pasture because that is happy time and I want him to relate the halter to getting to do something fun right now (of course I never leave it on if I am not home to keep an eye on him). I guess yesterday he was letting me know he was upset, because this morning when I went in with the wheel barrel to clean the stall and paddock my happy mule was back running up to say HI! rubbing all over me and checking my arm pits for extra nipples.....LOL. I had to watch my back once more so his excitement did not escalate into another attempt to jump on my back, oh yes he has tried that when playing and got a smack on the chest and a NO! I am happy to say I glad to see the return of my happy effectionate mule, even if I have to watch my back.
