There could be a sooty gene at work, which is another modifier but not well understood. I've had several foals born with all kinds of stripes and looking as grulla as could be, but when they shed their foal coats they get dark all over and look black. There is lots we don't know too. I've seen foals born this color that had red legs as well and no dorsal. They were blood red bay as adults. But with the extent of dark on the legs and face I'll bet this foals is very dark dun. That means that the dad, who is red dun, has the agouti gene, which happens some time although the only way to know is by the foals or a test.

I know we have probably talked a lot of all the different color combos in the past, so it may be faster using the search option and type in different key phrases and do it that way. Its really interesting to see where that trail leads. Just make sure you search within the last 900 days and don't limit the results to a small number. I know we have guessed the colors of different horses and talked about the sooty gene and any other modifiers. Hope this helps some. -Sarah
