The area is very soggy. Large puddles in the low lying areas and roadside ditches between Burns and the HMA gave us an idea of the road conditions and sure enough it was very muddy. We did not try to go beyone Wood Camp Reservoir cause that is where snow joined mud and we almost got stuck.
We saw only four horses; a stallion about the color of Dino and a dun mare and her two foals. She did not look pregnant nor did she have a foal from this year. The three duns were easily identifiable as they all have white blazes. We saw the three last year but they were with a Grulla stallion. They all looked well fed and healthy. The babies have grown. As we watched them slip and slide thier way up a hill we decided not to follow on foot.
Sorry we have no new pictures but we will go again in a few weeks. We shot footage in Diamond and Frenchglen and at the "P" Ranch outside French Glen. The ranch was home to Pete French probably the largest cattleman in that area in his time. The story goes that some of his vacqueros brought Spanish horses to Oregon with them in the 1870's. We did not attemp the Riddle HMA at all.
