Jim and I are getting ready to train Stormy and Riddle in Team penning and sorting and ourself. We have to find one more person to do this with us. But I really feel these horse's will do awesome in this. Any thoughts or ideas from fellow Kiger and horse owners welcome. Please though play nice:

Nola, I am surrounded by team penning, sorting, roping and cutting down here. That's all the trainers train for down here. Ive seen a lot of training for cutting and roping. Team penning and sorting have a lot of cutting skills involved. The trainer who broke my mare was an ex roper, and he broke her with a lot of roping basics. Taught her to pull a railroad tye behind her, in front of her, and side pass with it. Talk about building some muscles up, she looked amazing and she loved it also. Ive been to several penning competitions and the one thing I dont like is, some people will get there horse all reved up before they start, sort of like a barrel horse. I dont like that. There needs to be great communication and training in you and the horse while in there so you dont have to pull and tug your horse all over the place and have your horse running here and there with no clue what he's supposed to do. The horse needs to know what he has to do before going in there. Sort of like cutting, roping - and also you need to be able to communicate with your other teammates. It would be good if you could get a set group of 3 and you guys practice together... It's fun to watch, Im sure even more exciting to be in there. I have played around with the cows on my horse's, not competed, but just practiced. I know from Maverick's spook spells, he's fast as lightening and I feel like im cuttin on him when he cuts off to the side. He's too tall to cut off of though, but he sure could do the penning and sorting. Have your horse's been around cows any? Good luck with this!! Keep us posted on how they do!

I'd find a cow or calf that you could put in with her. Horses learn quickly that way that they can push a cow around and how to do it. Smoke and I did penning once and he'd never seen a cow before and was terrified of them because they just stood there and stared at him. Once the other team member got them moving he was fine to chase them. But when he had to guard the gate and they all came running at him he freaked. Where we pastured in Chehalis there were a few Angus cows and a bull that were in the pasture with them. The folks there used to throw extra raw corn on the cob into the pasture. Bravo decided that corn was too good for cows and walked up and bit the bull who was eating some of it. The bull bellowed and started spinning. When he tired of spinning Bravo walked up and bit him again. Kiger 1, bull 0

we are looking for a reliable 3rd person. I may ask a friend, but she is into ropeing, so i do not know. But i do feel it will happen. One ol' cowboy felt these two Kiger i have would be excellent for bull dogging. their size and such. We are looking at that also. No matter what we do we all will have to be trained.
