Hey Kiger board:
Kristi and Randy Billinger's mare Isabella (see the thread under health titled Isabella and Sky) is not doing good....Everyone pretty much thought she was in the clear and then on 1/2 started showing mild colic symptoms. Loaded her and headed for KSU. They cannot find what is troubling her, ran some test, did some sonagrams, etc. She was resting when we left but still not comfortable. Last evening she was the same and they said she got worse once so they sedated her to make her comfy. I think they have done that one more time. They are walking her and have tubed her and put water and oil in a couple of times. The problem is nothing is classic so they aren't sure what is happening - she is defecating, passing gas, has good gut sounds - nothing points to impaction. They have looked with ultrasound and have palpated her rectally too numerous times to count, and her blood work is good, belly tap showed slight increase in protein but they said nothing to be concerned about. Yesterday they thought she had splenic entrapment (sp?) so they gave her medication to shrink her spleen and we jogged her for 15 minutes. That poor mare jogged her butt of and did it willingly and we all know how much Izzy thinks of work so I was totally surprised that she worked for us when she didn't feel good - she showed us what heart she had and did what we asked. The idea was to shrink the spleen and then jog her in hopes that if her colon was looped over the spleen we could jog it lose. Apparently this is not uncommon to have happen and since they originally couldn't find her kidney on ultrasound they thought this was her problem But, after jogging her we found the kidney which I thought was wonderful news but she is still in pain. Not sure what is going on with her. If anyone has time today and cares to search the net to see if anyone else out there has experienced such events her syptoms are - presses butt hard against wall, so hard she bows in the middle. At first I thought it was the abscess had ruptured but tests have proved that is not the case. And she just wants to lay down, she doesn't roll though. I have started looking up plant poisonings this morning to see what we can find.
So if anyone has any experience with the above symptoms, or any thoughts, Kristi sure would love to hear from you guys...I told her I'm posting on the board so hopefully we can put our heads together and help out a bit....
