Today Stormy aborted her perfectly formed foal, the reason was the cord was twisted so tight all the way up to the foal that it cut off the supply...She was a perfect foal...The Vet told us this was cause by a very active foal for it to be this tight...I am heart broken for myself, and for Stormy, but I also know she will be okay...just wanted to let you all know...

I am so very, very sorry nola, I know how very much you were looking forward to this baby. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Stormy. I am glad to hear that Stormy is healthy and able to have another foal in the future.

thank you all for you words...Tonight when we were down feeding and I was grooming her, she would stop eating and get a far away look and just stare for a bit, and then go back to eating what I call her yummies,(Strategy, and bran),is this normal...And another question? we are thinking of breeding her during what is called her foal heat, the vet assures us the problem with the foal was and is rare, my thing is is this good for her, I know allot of people do it, and I understand it,but I worry about it being to soon...please tell me if any of you did this and how the mare reacted...I know it is my choice, but I am trying to educate myself on this subject....thanks for all the help I know you all will give me...

We lost a foal from Lark and Chinny this way. I'm so sorry for your disappointment. You might want to wait until Spring to rebreed her. Mares go rather dormant during winter and the stalllion does also to a degree. You don't want a new baby in November anyway. Gosh, that is really too bad.

spring, winter, and fall are the best months here to have a foal, especially fall, we do not have bad weather per say except in the summer months...why do people foal breed to begin with?isn't that time hard on her because she may have just given birth, and the foal is still nursing, or like Stormy lost it?

I don't like to breed at the foal heat but I know it can be done. Will you still be in AZ a year from now? I know you talked about moving. So planning for when she will foal next and your plans to relocate should be a consideration when next to breed her. Fantasy lost Fernando after her first foal heat. We talked about breeding her on the next heat cycle but I decided to wait until her 3rd heat cycle because I wanted to be sure the weather would be nice. I think it just matters what your priorities are and careful planning for the future. Of course as you know it does not always go according to plan but we do hope so.

one person told us to foal breed so she won't think that the next time she foals she does not have to do anything, she did not clean it or anything, and that if i wait she might not do any of the normal stuff, thinking that this is how it is suppose to be, and then I will have to take care of the foal from the get go...yes we will be here in the valley at least till 2011, and we will not move up to the mountains till spring/summer anyway...and if I do foal breed this foal will still be a 2010 baby, and weaned in the Spring, am thinking about it, but still unsure...she is not a PMU Mare, and they are kept that way, and I do not want to abuse her body, I know I have allot to think about, and with all the advice you all give me and suggestions, they help me weigh out the options...thank you all so much for the kind words and the answers you have given me to my questions, please keep the answers coming, and the opinions, and advice...

Well good luck Nola. I know that's a tough decision to make. Sorry I can't share any advice with you.

I just love the advice people come up with...I have never heard of such a thing as a mare thinking they do not have to do anything with the foal after something like that. The maternal instinct will kick in and she will be fine if you breed her later. I can't even understand the reasoning if you rebred her right now as opposed to later that that would make one bit of difference - it's still eleven months away!
Some mares are not good mothers no matter what the situation and when you breed, but I have never heard of that in the Kiger breed...Arabians and Thoroughbred, yes, but not a horse that is not even far into domestication. The mothering instinct is very high in wild mares and would be so for at least the next three generations from the wild.
I personally would wait until it is spring and more into the natural rhythm of life.

we spoke to the vet, he isn't against foal heat breeding, but he too said later, but he said in February, so it will be born in Jan. he is big in the TB greed and the birthday thing they have, if a foal is born in December no matter what in January it is considered 1 year old, to me that is wrong... We have made a decision, we are not going to foal heat breed, we are going to wait, and I just may wait a year...I want to spend some good time with her, riding again...but this is sure, no breeding for now...
