Thoght I'd share some new video my friend uploaded of her mare, Kira at the trainer's yesterday. She's learning to play cow and jumped barrels for the 1st time. She is out of my girl - Lakota and Saphiro. She sure does love cow work. When she had her at the ranch in Montana for training in april, they did a lot of cow work and she loved it - wouldnt stand still at all, just itching to go work a cow. www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0aXZkmNHBIwww.youtube.com/watch?v=fKO-d73m6loThere are 5 other video's if you just click on "outtrailriding" and it will show them all.

Beautiful mare, I really, really like her! As far as the training videos, nope don't like them at all! Why would you put a human into an animal (confrontational) situation? How is that teaching "cow sense"? The mare is athletic. Is she cowy? Probably. IMO all she is learning in the video is to have NO respect for the human. I see an agitated, frustrated mare. Had I watched the same video with a cow or a training dummy I would have said"Nice athletic mare!".

If I hadn't seen the other videos of her pinning her ears at you and being really upset, then I would have thought that the "cow" video was pretty cool. Be sure that she doesn't think that she is lead mare! From my experience, horses that respect another don't pin their ears and act bossy! I am sure you are well aware that this kind of behavior can escalate and become dangerous to humans. I hope that this is just young mare nonsense and that she will get her head on straight as to respecting humans!

This happens to be one of my favorite mares...she is Lusitano/Kiger and a perfect example of dun with the creme gene - what would really be considered the "claybank" as far as terms would go. She is also a half sister to our young stud, Gringo.
As far as the training, the Luso crosses are SUPER sensitive and over cueing and asking the same thing a million times (ala Parelli...Lyons, etc.) just completely frustrates them and as you can see, pisses them off. The gal working the horse is basically challenging the mare which honestly, being of bull fighting background - is, well, fighting words! This is commonly done with actual bull fighting horses - jumping at them and dodging side to side, it creates the aggression that they want...
I know it sounds as if I am putting down the trainer, which I am not. She probably has some really good things going on, but alot of the Natural horsemanship stuff is way too over exaggerated for horses like that. Many people don't know how to work with horses with that horsonality, it is a delicate balance and they are easily offended.
She has grown in to one gorgeous mare though!

The trainer is a parelli trainer - not sure if you guys are familiar with there type training but they call it playing games! My friend has been pleased with what she has shown her and Kira so far. They are both learning. Good or bad - they will figure it out. My friend knows her horse and she will see if this program is not for her - the more training she recieves, she'll see the progress or decline....trust me, this mare is her child and she only wants the best. She is starting to get concerned of her attitude hasnt changed yet tho.
She is a great mare - I will have a full sibling to her in April. I bred Lakota to Saphiro and am super excited about the foal. I hope its a girl - Im more partial to the girls!!

I see what you mean, her ears are back but not flat back, and they come forward quite often.
I remember trying to play with Chinny once. I unzipped my coat and flapped it at him from outside the arena to make him run in the arena. I only did it once though as he got big and laid his ears flat back. I had to pick up a lunge whip and chase him for a bit so he wouldn't think he could do that. I wonder how much of horse to horse communication we are rude about without knowing it.

Angel...congrats on the upcoming foal!!! I bet you are super excited and you will LOVE the Saphiro kids - I just love Gringo and he is so sweet and easy to deal with. The other colt, out of Chilli and by Saphiro, is easy to work with too, the gal that owns him just adores him.

Take a look at this video footage of Cavalia Introduction. www.cavalia.net/pages/theShow/Inleiding.aspx?lang=EN-CAYou will notice aggressive behavior in a few of the horses that are performing without riders. I admire what these horsemen achieve with the horses, but wonder what amount of mundane repetition these horses can tolerate before warning expressions turn to physical aggression. Notice facial expression and baring teeth. I would love to see this, but ticket prices are quite expensive. Cavalia DVD and book can be ordered by catalog. www.cavalia.net/pages/theShow/Inleiding.aspx?lang=EN-CAFarrier's Greeting Cards www.hoofprints.com

We are planning on going to Cavlia soon - it's here in Atl and we are super excited about it.
Yes Im very excited about my new foal coming - can't wait to see the Saphiro influence. I've heard such great things about him and his offspring AND it's out of my sweety, Lakota. I ponied Bella off her yesterday for about 2 hours all around...they both did great. Bella has really matured and is going to be an amazing horse as well. She is very willing - I sure will have a grand herd once this foal gets here...
