Hmm, I don't think so. I saw one picture of rafter hips and it was quite... well... ugly. Wickee's don't seem ugly or weird, just no muscling like you said. Hopefully someone else can come on and post a pic of rafter hips.

Sense she is just coming 3 and exercise is up to her, building muscle is something I am sure she is not conscious of..LOL. She does run and play with the other young horses. She gets 20 min. of groundwork 3days a week lately, nothing to build muscle. I was watching a program on RFDTV where they were discussing feeding young horses ages weanling to 2yrs of age and how in order to sell the QH 2 yr olds for alot of money they had to look like mature horses, they had to be pumped full of feed, to be honest it bother me to some extent. Wickee gets a moderate amount of grain, vitamin suppliment and grass hay. I could pump her up but I really don't want to do that. She will fill out again and later this spring she will be started under saddle and those muscles will start to build up with regular work.
It would be nice if someone would come on and explain rafter hips or better yet show a picture with an explaination to us.

Found one definition of rafter hips: Rafter Hips
Wide, flat hip shaped like a "T" when viewed from behind. Cattle tend to have this pelvis type to the extreme. Uncommon, usually seen in Gaited horses, Saddlebreds, and Arabs. Rafter hips are often amplified by poor muscling along thighs and lower hips. Exercises to improve muscling helps the problem.
And from a Spponenburg article I got: The croup is sloped, and the tail is characteristically set low on the body. The rear quarters vary from fairly massive and heavily muscled to a more slenderly built and less excessively muscled conformation. From the side there is usually a break in the curve of the hind quarter somewhere in the area of the base of the tail, rather than the full even curve of the Quarter Horse from top of croup to gaskin. From the rear they are usually "rafter hipped," meaning that there is no distinct crease at the backbone, but rather the muscling of the hip tapers up so the backbone is the highest point. You can google images - "rafter hip horse" and see a few pics. As those pics are of someone's horses and two examples I saw were mustangs ( Sorria and Pryor) I am not posting pics to avoid anyone feeling as though I am criticizing their horses.
Just my two cents here and I am going home today to take a critical look at my horses and take some more pictures for my own reference

Yea Tiffany, I doubt Wickee is worried about what her hips look like. I also don't believe in "pumping" them full of food to make them larger. It just isn't right... With her riding training and her own growth, she'll come to fill out like her mama.

Bobbe, thanks for the search on google. Those are some interesting and beautiful horses aren't they? I'm not one to really like rafter hips but I know some people are and it is interesting to see the traits in the old breeds like this. I actually think the Spanish mustang mare I was raised on had rafter hips... she had a horrible trot (don't know how I sat to it, but I was young and bouncey ;D ), I wonder if other rafter hipped horses do?

I always thought it was when you stood behind the horse and looked at it. Rafter hips are when the hips make an upside down V instead of a U. Like looking at the roof of a house. Donkeys have rafter hips too. Smoke was that way until I rode him for about a year and then his hip got filled in and also increased in depth when you looked at him from the side.

Just like people, some breeds tend to have more muscle genetically than others....some drafts and QH's are some of those breeds. Getting a horse fat to have a rounder look to them takes an educated eye to see the difference. Wickee is just young and not developed. She has deeper angles in her shoulder and hip (like alot of Kigers) so it makes her hip look small. If she had a more open angle, the hip would look "rounder" naturally, but would have nothing to do with muscle.
Horses can also hold water over the hips and in the belly which can make them appear rounder, but that is just them not utilizing the feed properly and too much water in the feed (a 50lb sack of sweet feed has 10 lbs of water weight)....again, someone with a trained eye can see those things.
I think Wickee looks fine! That hip will round up and fill out as she matures and gets a job!

I have found Pedros shape has evolved..Pedro came into our family in Feb.2006. This is him 4 months in pasture, grained but not worked much, excpet to run from people and even jump out of pastures. This is Pedro 6 months into his ground work and barn kept. He is 4 years old,he has a lumpy hind end . I do prefer a QH rear end...This is him playing with his buddy Winter day 2008.. We train regularly, we have been in the saddle a few times.I do try to give him one or two days off a week.

Well, maverick looks the same as your Wickee. He's not quiet filled out yet, just that ackward stage I guess. Im hoping he'll mature more this year. So don't stress over it, just give her time to go thru puberty ... Check out the "Uglies" thread, maybe that's what she's going thru right now.
