Saturday I hauled Bella out on her 1st official outing off the farm. I took her to a local horse show, just to get her out and exposed to all that stuff. She did great - even backed off the trailor twice and walked right up on there like she'd been doing it forever. I had already been loading her on/off for a while tho. She was nickering at the other horse's at first to see who all was there I guess, but then after about 10 minutes she settled right down and was fine. Just looking at everything and everyone - never spooked tho. But everyone did comment on how big she was for a yearling - ha! Ive got a big girl I've also been working on her tying for about 3 weeks now, started with 30 minute sessions and have built up to 45 now. She's doing great - now she just stands there but the whole thing was never a really big deal, which Im so thankful for. The 1st time I tied her, the 1st 20 minutes she spent playing, rubbing on the tree, nibbling on the ropes, etc. It was quiet funny, then she wanted to leave and realized she couldn't, pulled back about 3 seconds and that was it. I didn't really tie her and haven't yet, just looped the rope over the high limb twice so it would give with her and she wouldn't get scared. Amazing at how smart she is. She really does pick up on everything quickly. Going to make my job a lot easier So all is well, and sorry, no pics this time. My computer at home got struck by lightening, so its dead now

Yea Im hoping to have her pretty much settled so when we do start her in 2 more years (so long to wait) she will take it with ease and become a good riding horse. She really remember's everything nicely - I could teach her something and not do it for a month or so and she has still got it, pretty amazing. Like I said, she is making my life a lot easier. This past spring when the flies starting coming around I knew I had to get her broke to the spray bottle - only took one day and about 20 minutes and she's been fine ever since. There's not much that she won't figure out and accept eventually. A lot of it is the curiosity - she is so nosey and wants to check everything out (as most kigers are), most of the time test tasting as well I had a friend come over Sat and she brought her kids, the little boy went in the stall with Bella and she sniffed him from head to toe, it was pretty funny. She had to check him out cause he was new. She's in that funky stage - her head looks big, all of her parts look gangly!! When do they start filling out more, maybe next year she'll start filling in everywhere?

Long yearlings are that way. I remember asking Chinook at this age "You're going to grown into this head, right?" I was so worried, but he did. All the parts were nice, but they didn't go together. At two they look better, at three the girls look wonderful, at five they are pretty much done. She won't ever look like a QH, she'll be svelte, but you can see pics of Prairie at two and get an idea. They started very light saddle work at two, mostly just sitting on her for a few minutes, getting her used to a bridle etc. And here is Ellen's Zuni at three, who is also full sister to Bella, Bella reminds me of Zuni

Looking at Zuni at 3yrs old I am amazed at how filled she is and that she has substance to her. Wickee has yet to fill out and gain bulk.

Thanks guys - I enjoy working with them, I've learnt it makes a much better horse for the long haul if you take the time to do all this to them - instead of throwing it all at them at once. I think Bella will be the same color as Prairie - she's really light. Prairie does look good for a 2 year old, hopefully Bella will grow into her legs soon I forgot how you measure them to see how tall they will be? Can someone tell me how to do that? I got to thinking and I would love to do reining with Bella, even Lakota if I could find a reining trainer close to me..just amateur but still would be fun just to be able to do the pattern at local shows. I think Bella would be good at Western Pleasure as well, and I do know a western pleasure trainer who is great!! But again, 2 more years HEE Could others post there yearling pics if they have them and then the 2 year olds pics? I would love to see the difference. And even 3 year old pics Thanks!

I think it is just great how much time you put into both Lakota and Bella'. I agree with you that it does make for a better horse in the long haul. I hope to do the same with Super that you are doing with Bella' just dragging him along to everything some pictures for you... Wickee yearling Wickee 2yrs old Wickee 3yrs old

I guess I need to get a tape on her and check and see how tall she is. You should know at 4 years old now, she does not look like she did at 3..LOL.
No, to the question about being able to ride her yet. I am trying to rally the troops here on the farm to hold a garage sale to help fund her training. I know it won't take much to get her going, but there has been so much chaos here as of late ...it looks like I am on my own. So much to do and so little time in the day, everyone going in differant directions.
