Thanks Kigerfan - Im a big believer in barefoot - I pulled Lakota's shoe's when I first got her, and she's been barefoot every since. Although, there was a transition period, it's not as easy as pull and go. They go thru a "ouchy" period of about 4 months or so, depending on the horse, but she's wonderful now and I will never put shoes on her or any horse if I can help it. I did buy boots for her during the transition, but didn't have to use them much.

Have you ever grown your nails long and had them that way for a while... or put on extensions, then by either breakage or clipping... had the fingernail down to just above the quick? Your finger pads are extremely sensitive for a while and I imagine it's pretty much the same for the interior of a horses hoof. Firefly has never had shoes and never will. I've read to many things that speak badly of them. I've had many people tell me that their horses can't go without shoes because of the fact that they have 'white' hooves and they are unstable. I'm no hoof expert by any means but I'm thinking that any horse can transition to barefoot with different extentions of healing time. Just my thoughts
