Anyone have experience with ulcers? The reason I ask is that the vet was describing a horse she had treated that was nervous, had a hard time holding muscle and weight, had a rough coat and also was often colicky. It was an Arab and the owner took it to Scottsdale even though it was slightly lame. While there it colicked big time and the vet hospital tubed it and found ulcers. After a month of gastroguard, a very expensive medication, it was able to go onto Silver Linings LCR herbs and is doing very well. She also said that because the horse was not working off of muscle it would strain things and had a lot of minor lameness that moved from area to area. She had strongly advised against the trip to Scottsdale. I never have heard of such a thing but in reading it sounds fairly common, especially in performance and stabled horses.

I guess it's a good thing the owner didn't heed the advice of the vet up here as it sounds as though the problem was discovered through the trip. Sometimes it's odd the way things work, isn't it? Then again...it could have ended in a nightmare of the right vet hadn't been on hand, I suppose...

Dianne:
I have a friend with a Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse...He's a 5yr old gelding that had never had any colic issues prior to her purchasing him from a friend....My friend took him to a boarding facility where he was in a 12x12 stall most of the time with just short daily turnout and on alfalfa/grass mix hay(Not my idea!)....The horse had multiple colic episodes and finally she took him to the high priced Equine only vets here in town....Well, come to find out after he got scoped that he had ulcers...Went on Gastroguard, moved to a different boarding facility where he only comes in at night now, and 2 years later he's never had any more problems and no more colic....He's thriving in a more natural setting....So hopefully the Arab will thrive just as well....

being in stables box's as i call them is like putting us in a jail cell for 24 hours a day then we get out for 1 hour... tht is how most stables are and it is so sad. I have learned allot from where I do stable,, I have learned what not to do... Each of my horse's will have their stalls that they come into at night or bad weather, but they will have a paddock to run in all day... off of their own stalls. as they come out of their stalls there will be covering for about 10 to 15 feet out then open paddock for them,,, that is my dream when we get up to the property...
