You know I have never had a problem deworming foals the first time. My foals want to put their mouth on everything and chew on everything and that includes the wormer sryinge. As long as you are quick with the plunger, the wormer is in and the out before they even know what happened, then I follow it up with a treat they love. The biggest mistake people make is going into the proccess nervous grabbing the foal and making it hold still before they even get the wormer up to it's mouth, get the whole procces worked up to a frenzy that is upsetting to a foal. A more training type approach to prepare your filly for the feeling of having the sryinge in her mouth would be to start fiddling with her mouth with your fingers. Does she allow you to hold her muzzle ? can you stick your fingers in the corners of her mouth and rub her gums, for a brief period of time, without much fuss? I always play dentist (check their teeth and such) with my foals and young horses they need to be comfortable with the vet or I in there mouth and it does make worming much easier as well. If they are comfortable with me handling their mouth introducing the wormer to them will be so much easier.

One thing that has helped me, even with fussy adults, is to fill an old wormer syringe with apple sauce. Give them a squirt of that, then the real wormer, then follow up with more apple sauce. Seems like they start hunting you down when they see the syringe after that! ;D

well i used both of your ideas and it worked really well! I started with a syringe of apple sauce and was very quick to not make a fuss with that going in her mouth and did that a few times then shot in the wormer quick like and she dident even care, then gave more apple sauce. It was a breeze. I even did it to mom and she bugged me for a long time after that to see if i had more! Thanks guys!

we have issues with worming Shooter he was so abused in the face and mouth before we got him, but it is getting easier with time and patients. Also Riddle he will bob his head and turn away, but we just keep rubbing the side of his face and work it up to his mouth, and finally we are able to blast it in, it has to be given so fast that is why I say blast... But time and patients is the best way no matter how young or how old...
