Wow, I love the ear barring on Mav. Are those neck stripes or is he wet in the fourth picture? Two really cute guys. Cherokee looks like a sweetie. How old is Breanna's Paso?

Thanks Dianne and Joan. Yes those are neck stripes, he's really marked up nicely. He's even got webbing on his face..I'll try and get a better picture of that next time.
Yes my cherokee is a sweetie. I'll be in the stall grooming him and as long as Im doing something with him, he's fine, but if I stop and start talkin to someone, he'll turn his head around and nudge me, like saying "UH HELLO" and he'll put his head over my shoulder like giving me big hug, just really trying to get my attention...hee when I start brushing him again, he'll quit..ha he's a character.
The Paso Fino is 17 years old. She's very well bred, which is why the previous owners used her as a broodmare. She's a sweet horse, she looks like a wooly burger in the picture, she fuzzes up as much as maverick does..

Here's a video of my boys from saturday. You can see how much more attentive maverick is verses my quarter horse. Cherokee doesn't care about me, like I said before, his 2nd love is FOOD..and he's got plenty of it in front of him...Maverick is like "Ok, what are you doing" www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkJHwc9Rc2A

You have some beautiful horses there and it seems from your discription two very differant personalities. That makes it fun when going to visit them I bet.

Yes they are totally different, which is a good thing. Keeps things interesting. Im so happy that mav's mane has really grown a lot since I got him. The lady that had him before cut it short to show him in dressage so I've been working on getting it back long. His tail his touching the ground. I think Im going to get the vet out to check his teeth to see if they need trimmed. He's 5 this year, so it may be time. He's not droppin feed or anything, just want to make sure, as part of my routine check. Has anyone else had to trim there teeth at this age?

Joan, yes he is on there. I put him on there back in December. I was torn and wasnt sure what to do with him. Even though we have started to bond and Im starting to figure him out and have fell in love with his personality, he is spooky and I wasnt sure he'd be the horse for me. I mostly trail ride, so I need a solid horse that doesn't freak out over a limb falling or such. His motto is bolt now, we'll discuss later. He is wonderful in an arena, he calms down real nice and no spooks in there, but the girl I bought him from showed him in dressage. Ive really battled back and forth with this everyday. For months Ive been torn on what to do, lots of sleepless night, going out to the barn and just staring at him trying to decide, im sure some of you know what Im talking about. He was going to be "MY DREAM HORSE" I had such high hopes and dreams and wanted to proudly put him out there and show our stuff. Maybe that is and was my 1st problem, anticipated too much from him at his age. If he will always be this way, with a high preservation instinct, then I just don't see him ever becoming the horse that I am looking for, but I know he is still young, especially in kiger years (5) and his exposure time on the trail has reached about 100 hours, so I know there's still time for maturity and improvement. He needs much more riding time and wet blankets, but I can see a change since I first got him. His spooking episodes are a bolt to the side or straight out take off, which I will do a one rein stop, (which he does easily) and make him look at whatever he thinks was going to kill him or just keep him going in circle and serpentines to get his mind off it, making him work harder. This is my first mustang, so Im just not sure what to do and if he'll ever be calmer. So my battle was to either 1, put more money into him (which we all know times are hard and Im also paying board on 2 horses) and see if that helps, or 2, find him a good home with someone more experienced with this. I have found a trainer who is going to take him for a while and put him on the trails and put some major riding time on him, more than what I can, which is only 1 or 2 times a week away from home. I ride him during the week around the barn and work him, but he's going to take him off. So I'm hoping after this, I'll be able to see an improvement and hopefully we'll be a team. You see what my decision was I'm ok with spooks here and there, I know there's not a bomb proof horse out there, my quarter horse is as broke as they come and he still spooks every now and again. I can handle that, no biggie, but I also ride a lot of parades. I have done a lot of round pen work with him, in and out of arena, so it's not like I havent put time in him trying to help him think instead of react, and eveything I have done with him has been great. I can ride around with a tarp hanging on his head with no problem, whips, lariats, no biggies.. He's very very smart, which means he gets bored easily so he really keeps me on my toes trying to come up with new things. My newest de-spooking object is a bag full of cans...As far as trainable, very , he picks up on cues, etc quick and remembers. So I'm hoping with more wet blankets, he'll become better with that also. Ive had several great people from this board help me, so I want to say thanks to them. I know I've reached out to several trying to get some sort of idea if he'll get thru this or not and there experiences with this sort of situation. So keep your fingers crossed for me, my toes, fingers, arms, legs, etc are!!! Sorry so long, just wanted to explain.

Update - I went out yesterday evening and played with mav. I used my knew de-spooking toy, the bag full of cans. He looked at it for a second and flintched but never moved . YAY and after about 5 minutes, I had it all over him, he was more trying to play with the bag than worried about it. Then I set up my obstacle course for him so that I could lunge him. I put a feed bag, lariat rope, my bag of cans and a few other things all around my circle so that he'd have to pay attention to where is feet were, he was fine, never even tried to not walk across them. So as you can see, ive done my ground work with him. Then I took some ropes and flung all over him. Had them in and out of his front/back legs, he'll let me do anything to him and nothing is a big deal when it comes to stuff like that. He was following me around everywhere. My next session will be in a totally new area, this was my 2nd place Ive worked him, so Im trying to change up the environments once he gets used to where we're currently working, Ill put him in a whole new place outside of the pasture.

Hoorah! as my friend would say he was a good boy, good boy. Sounds like you are doing all the right things with him. I think a lot of it is a matter of who is asking, and do they trust that person. I think you are getting more and more of his trust and he's trying really hard because of that.

Yes Dianne. I think that has a lot to do with it. He is beginning to finally see me as a true leader. I have learnt that you have to gain there trust and respect. They surely dont automatically give it to you. You have to prove to them that you are the leader. Im trying harder everyday when Im around him to be more confident and consistant, so if my attitude changes then he will change.... Hopefully...... He will still test me..hee-hee

You nailed it on the head. My great friend and trainer from Olympia was here to help me get some training done. She said that the minute she thinks "I only have another hour to work" or "I have to be some place by 3:00" she sees a big change in the horse she is working. I'm so guilty of doing that. I usually have an agenda of five things to do and work this horse is one of them.

Me and a group of people went trail riding Sat...the guy who I am getting to ride Mav road him. He was FABULOUS. He was the lead horse the entire time, he had 2 spooks, one was no big deal, just a flintch, the other was bigger, he jumped and turned but it was because there were 2 deer that jumped out and none of the other horses or us even saw them. Mav saw them before anyone....He was very calm all day, except when I took his buddy away from him, then he started hollering. The other 2 people we were riding with was so impressed with how far along he's come. There 2 horse's were acting up all day, one was very spooky and the other just about threw the guy riding him. So just thought Id share my good news. YAY!!
