I am woundering if i need to start working my mare. she had a foal 6 weeks ago and is now quite heavy. do i just let her be as long as she dosent get obese? ???I have had 2 kids and know it takes time to get back into shape!! She gets grain and is out most all day but not much but dry grass so i still feed hay twice a day, but of corse less than winter rations. how would i work her with baby at her side?

Dara, it can be difficult to work a mare with such a young foal...the foal is still very needy and if she does not have another foal to play with, then she will fret - so will the mare which makes it hard for her to concentrate on any lessons. If she is heavy, maybe refigure your feeding program. Milk peaks about five weeks and goes down hill after that. An average size lactating mare needs about 240,000 calories per day (or 24 Mcals). What are you feeding? Do you have any picts of her as of late?

I will take some photos today, and i have been thinking of cutting back on her grain. I feed a wet cob and i would have to mesure her amount to tell you.

No, she is not fat. She has a belly, but that is the type of feed you are giving her - bloating her up. If you cut back on the feed, she will still have a belly, but loose her topline, which you don't want. Keep looking into something more balanced.
