LadyRose gave birth to a big colt this morning! He looks like he will be bay or dark dun (currently has a frosted mane and tail) and has a star that looks like someone took one piece of pie out of it. We had a crazy time of it as Smoke suddenly decided the colt was an intruder and kept going after him with ears back. That was it, Smoke had to move but trying to catch the great big snot was hard. Smoke got several well deserved kicks (LadyRose is very good at running and kicking without breaking stride). Thankfully she is an experienced mom. Cedar tried to help but is so close to foaling she wasn't much help and Lark was no help at all. Finally we got him out of there with no harm to the colt, but we were well winded. Six acres is a big pasture!
So we put Smoke in with the rest of the herd, including Quil Ceda, on the other side of the road. He ran over to join them and was greeted by a flying V of auntie mares running at him who let him know that he was NOT welcome. I knew they would put him in his place if necessary. Teanna took on the task of keeping him at bay from there, putting herself out in front of the rest as first line defense. Lots of squeals and posturing with Smoke making most of the noise. Teanna is only two but she was brave and stood up to him and chased him off. So he ended up pacing the fence calling to "his" herd who were glad to have him gone. Silly boy! His only defense is that he was raised in a pen instead of a herd.
After the foal had a nice long nap to rest up we were able to get some pictures. When they look this good the first day I smile. It will be fun to watch him grow up. His baby name is Cruiser.
