So, who on here has vaccinated their horses for strangles. What does it involve, how much did it cost you, and what are the chances of my horse actually getting full blown strangles from the first shot? And yes, my horses have been exposed to strangles, just never got it. Thanks ahead of time!

Be careful if your horse has been exposed. He could have had a low condition and if that is the case you cannot vaccinate for the next year without possibly causing problems.
If and when you decide to vaccinate, use the nasal vaccine. It goes in just as the strangles enters the body and is the biggest help. the shot is pretty useless.
Always consider that if it is something treatable (which most strangles is), then you may not want to vaccinate. If your horse has had strangles and abcessed, then they have up to a nine (9) year immunity.
Do some research from many point of view before you make a decision. If he is at a public barn with lots of horses in and out; or you travel with him alot, you may want to consider protection.
Hope this helps!

I've heard that horses can have a subclinical case of strangles, i.e. their body is holding off the infection. These horses can perhaps be a source of infection to other horses but have no symptoms. When they get the shot it overpowers their defenses and they "get" strangles. In reality they've had it all along. Best to do some research as Michelle suggests and talk to your vet (or vets) as well.

wow sounds kinda like a bad thing but the shot can be even worse. I will be talking and reading up on strangles, it is so scary. Having these horse's are allot of work just like having kids, but well worth it.
