Many people at the ranch think all those whiskers on the nose and under the eyes and the long hair under the chin should be shaved, that the horse has an unkept look with that, I love the long whiskers. I love a natural looking horse, and besides, the whiskers are there for a reason. That'd be like snipping your kitty's whiskers off because they look unkept to me I've had a few people want to get hold of Firefly with some clippers but they're just flat not allowed anywhere near her with them. She will shed out when she sheds out, she will grow or loose whiskers when she grows or looses them.

I like to clip them up if I'm doing something special, or like in the case of our mini, he has so much hair, his halter don't fit him anymore. So I tidy him up so it fits. But they don't have to be in show shape look all the time like my friend does with her filly. She's so particular about about it, she can't even have a spot of mud on her.

if you all saw Stormy's hind quarter on her left side it was caked with mud, and this was the first opportunity I have had to curry and brush her out. When it gets warm she will get a bath, then maybe every 8 weeks or so, then when it starts to cool off we will give her one last bath till spring.

Firefly gets very few baths and none of course in the winter. I brush her off real well and that's it in the winter. During the summer, if she's sweaty, I will rinse that off real well. As far as using soap on her, what I do is take a bucket full of water and mix a small amount of soap into it, then I use a natural sponge and wash her with that. There's so little soap in there that there is no sudsing or anything. Then once she's been washed with the solution, I go around her and rinse her real well all the way around, then go around and rinse her again. After that, I use a sweat scraper to get the excess water off and spray an avocado/aloe vera conditioner on her mane tail and forelock and brush them out. That's the extent of her 'baths'

Stromy is such a cutie pie My daughter loves her horses whiskers and would never clip them I just think Mustangs need to look like Mustangs that includes whiskers and I never clip there manes either. But everyone else gets the clippers ...LOL ;D . I just can not leave our Clydesdale mare with a beard and Clydesdales got them, she looks so much better in the summer with a clipped face, well more feminine anyway. My Morgan gets a long bridle path and her whiskers clipped a clean face anything to make her look less masculine. I am sure my Kigers are happy to free from buzzing clippers.

I feel those whiskers were put there for a reason and they will stay. maybe the reason is so we humans wonder what they were intended for. She is a cutie. I just love her so. Today it has been raining cats and dogs, so I know she will be a mess , par for the course I guess. Oh yeah another baby was born today out there where we stable our's and it is a filly, so we think Flashy could go with in the next 4 weeks. will keep everyone posted.

I imagine they're feelers just like cat and dog whiskers. I figure when they don't need them anymore, they'll drop them
