Last night right around 11pm Xana foaled. The little filly has a lot of unfolding to do, but is very cute. She haas a very dished head, tiny tippy ears, and Xana's eyes. I don't know how a dun foal's coat changes, but she looks lighter than Xana, who is a lighter dun already. She's also quite the talker! She would nicker and then the whole barn would answer back. Anyways, the foaling went well. I helped Xana while she was pushing and got the nose clear of the bag. The filly stood after about 40 minutes and ate at about 90 minutes. I was a little worried as after she stood she wandered to a corner and stayed there for a while, but about the time I was going to brave Xana's protectiveness, she started rooting around. Once she found the bar, she was golden. Xana is being a very good mom. I stayed out there until about 2am and then went crawling into bed. There was a instance when the filly was down when I'm not sure if Xana rushed me or was circling fast around her baby, but I jumped up from rubbing the foal dry, flicked the towel at her the keep her back from me. She hasn't tried anything else, but I haven't gone in without something I can use to shoo her away. She did accept a carrot from me and let me touch her, but she's clearly agitated. She let the filly come over and greet me and infact usually stays on the other side of her. I will have more time tonight to handle Xana and see how she's reacting. I've tried not to impose too much, but have been in several times cleaning, gathering the placenta, and giving grain and bran mash.
So does this make ours the first foal of the newly adopteds?
I will post photos tomorrow as I have to download them to a CD first.

Alright here is just a teaser photo as I've run into a snag on downloading. I was to meet the vet today for the foal's exam on my lunch break and got a call when I was already out there that she needed to reschedule due to emergencies...so now we are trying for tomorrow's lunch break. I may not be able to download photos until Wed. First things first... Suzy

Oh my gosh she is precious and FUZZY. If I did not see the mare and just foal pics I would swear she was a pony baby. She came out ready for the colder early spring weather we have here in Oregon that is for sure. Her face is just darling so petite it is definately a girl look. Again Congratulations! ;D

love the pictures thank you for sharing, I agree she is so fuzzy, but dang if she isn't cute, congratulation on you little girl. She has such a tiny delegate feminine face, she makes me think of a girls girl, which is good.

They are both doing fantastic! Xana had been putting on some weight until I started turning them out in the arena...Zorya is making her work hard to keep up! Xana is a freight train a comin' when she trots...holy cow! I can hardly wait to ride that trot! When Zora is racing around full speed, Xana has to break into a canter...until now, I'd only seen her do a few strides in a row. Sometimes she cuts corners to catch up to the little speed demon and had to take a few18-24" jumps in the process. They are turned out in the lesson arena that has a few jumps set up it it. She took them with good form and without a rub. We are now back to pre-baby relationship so I have begun to push on Zora's lessons while Xana is tied. I can lead her around with the rope around her butt and chest and pick up all 4 feet. When the leading gets a little better, I'll be able to give them short turn outs in a grassy 1 acre pasture. Xana is a very good mom and , besides her ribbiness, looking very good. She even has dapples! Suzy Some photos are posted below.
