Nola, if you can try smacking him on the shoulder, as that is were mama bites him when he's bad :-)

Good advice...I never hit in the face. It will backfire when you go to halter and deworm, etc - plus it is not natural. A flat handed slap on the shoulder (or a pinch - I especially do this when they bite or slip my thumb in their mouth) or a smart smack on the bum is usually all that is needed. For kicks, I will grab their foot mid-air and hold it low for a second - fixes that up real quick. I don't try to hang on to it, just hold it.
Try to discern what is "normal" play that they would be doing with another foal or what is personal. When they are doing more normal play, I usually just distract them with something else or redirect (or walk away) - don't want them to get in trouble for normal stuff especially when they don't have other foals to play with.

yes I do do that now, and he is now responding better, He also knows when my hand goes up, at his head, but not touching him, i do stop ,stop motion,he stops, then I release the pressure, and he get rewarded with a good scratch all over, so he know not to come into my space unless invited...

tonight we was so full of energy. he allowed Jim and I to work with him and the halter...he lets me pick out his hooves, rub all over, and i have had to clean his sheath,,,it was icky like teets on a mare. but he let me us baby wipes and clean him...He has and is coming along.. I love how curious he is. when both Jim and i are in the pen together, he tends to stick more so with me. Jim hangs back and lets me work with him, but is there in case i need him...will post pictures later...of him, stormy, and the land..
