I'm a little confused by long term holding. If I understand it right, once a horse goes to long term holding the horse can't be adopted, which doesn't make any sense to me. It seems like it would be important to be able to go to long term holding and pull out our Kigers, Sulphurs, and other Spanish mustangs from there. Where is long term holding ?

I am not sure they can't be adopted...I've remember seeing horses years ago listed, but maybe that's changed.

They can not be adopted. When I was in Nebraska I talked with BLM and some local ranchers. There are 33,000 horses between Nebraska and Kansas in long term holding. They are on private ranches. Some on pastures or dry lots. The ranchers are paid by the government to hold these horses. You cannot go see them. I think that if we (the taxpayers) are paying for feeding them we should be able to see them!!!!

The Midwest Mustang and Burro Saddle club was lucky to be allowed on a holding facility ranch a couple years ago.....It was nice to see that this place (and I'm sure there are worse holding facilities) was thousands of acres...Large enough to support the herd that was on it....They had geldings and mares, and only in the worst weather have to hay the horses....This ranch owner and his wife took great pride in having the horses on their land and really loved having them....The very nice Ok/Tx/KS area BLM arranged us for this....
It is my understanding that mustangs cannot be adopted once they are on long-term placement.

So, is there anyway to track Kigers, Sulphurs, Carter Resevoir horses, etc... that have landed in long term holding? And, I just have to say again that this policy just doesn't make any kind of sense - even for the government!

It would be interesting to start a long term holding just for specific groups of mustangs (Kigers, Sulphurs, Cerbats, etc...) so they could be preserved as intact bands.
