Thank you--yes, Roxy is an Akita-- she's a long-coat. You don't see too many of them because breeders don't breed for the long coat. AKC considers it a "fault"-- Akitas in the natural habitat and job function (bear hunters) with a long coat would have trouble in the winter icing up. So they don't breed for it even though the long coats tend to have better temperaments and are gorgeous. However when breeding for good temperament short-coat akitas, you will find higher number of pups with long coats showing up in the litters. They sell them as pet quality.  |
