Tuesday was the end of an era, for me at least, and for the Kigers as well. Many of you may remember the 23 year old mare adopted out in 2003 with a filly on her side. She was foaled on the Riddle HMA in 1980. She came into my life 3 years after her adoption and still ungentled. She ended up being a horse only trusting of me and no one else. She became halterbroke, and was able to stand for me for the farrier to trim her feet. That was all I ever asked of her. I was not able to get another foal from her during her stay with me, but the gift she gave me of just her presence was enormous. I named her Riddles Dynasty, and her story is remarkable. She was first gathered from Riddle at age 6 in 1986. She was then re released out to Kiger. She evaded capture in 1987, but was captured and released back onto Riddle in 1989. All subsequent capture/releases were back on to her home range of Riddle where she was finally gathered and offered for adoption at her ripe old age of 23. Dynasty turned 30 this year. She left us on Tuesday. She was humanely euthanized after suffering what appeared to be a stroke. I feel both very sad and very blessed. Riddles Dynasty was the best of the best, continuing to be released back into the herd to reproduce, back when they were still turning the best back out. Rest in Peace, Mama Mare.

What an appropriate name for your treasured mare. I am sorry to hear that her physical time with you has come to an end. You are to be commended for the time, patience and dedication that you showed Dynasty. To be able to halter and hold a wild mare of that age for the farrier is an accomplishment in itself. Riddle Dynasty was fortunate to have you.

This makes cry and makes me angry. I feel so sorry for the mustangs that are so traumatized, their lives are so disrupted, families torn apart in the gathers. How sad that this wonderful mare did not live the rest of her life producing more quality foals in the wild where she belonged. Same with Argo. Why bring them to auction??? I think that as much as we love these horses we are in denial of just how we get them and the cost to the horses. Yes many adapt and become healthy happy horses.
The great part of this story is that she ended up with you Kim! You appreciated and respected who and what she was and honored that. She reciprocated by trusting only you. What an honor she returned to you by sharing her spirit with you. I know your heart must ache. You obviously touched her heart! Hugs.

The idea of rounding up a "senior citizen" such as Argo or Dynasty reminds me of Tracey's story on her mustangU blog....Sad, but I hope someone will help out with this beauty: mustangu.blogspot.com/See her 03/05/10 entry about the buckskin.... Angela

That's what is so captivating about these horses, their trust of us is so thrilling. They make us part of their herd and it is such a compliment and a thrill. You did good Kim!
