Hi everyone! It's been a while since I have posted anything, but I visit the board fairly regularly.
I've got a medical situation that I'm hoping someone has had some experience with.
My Grandson's 9 yr old QH mare has just been diagnosed with a Nerve Sheath Tumor (Sarcoma) We've been told that if you remove it, it will just grow back.
Has anyone had any experience with these and what has the prognosis been?
Thanks in advance for your input!
N

Hi Nancy, I'm sorry to hear about your grandsons horse. I am not familiar with this type of tumor. I sure hope there is something you can do for her. Kim

Sorry to hear this Nancy. I tried looking it up on horse.com but didn't find anything. Did you find anything on the internet?

My daughter aquired a 11 yr old Arabian that had a large sarcoma removed from his girth area. We were told by his previous owner the vet actually cut away all the surrounding skin and the sarcoma in order to ensure it would not return. It has not returned he was left with a bald spot scar. We were told it was a mess healing, mainly beacause of the place of the sarcoma. He has a second sarcoma in his flank area, the vet simply attempted to remove the sarcoma only, from the surface of the skin, that sarcoma has returned. As it does not cause him any grief and is not in the way of saddling as the other was, we don't worry about it to much.

Thanks for your responses! I know we have seen a couple different horses with a sarcoid tumor... and they both were removed successfully. There's a little information on Nerve Sheath Tumors.... but I'm sure not finding much about the prognosis. My grandson is supposed to be talking to our vet (and I'm trying not to interfere and let him follow up on it) but my curiousity is getting the better of me. I'll keep looking. My grandson was just in the process of selling this mare as he's going to be gone for two years on a mission for our church. Probably going to put a damper on that....until we know what's what!

You could try putting her on immune stimulants, wouldn't hurt. I think there were some suggestions along that line under the sarcoids thread.
