Thought this might interest you all. It does for me! Yesterday I had the privledge of meeting and being able to take video of Sulphur's Anhur Maximus (Sulphur's Chance grandson) as well as Sulphur's Arista. Arista is what Dr. Sponenberg has defined as a claybank. She hasn't been genetically tested for color (just has her DNA on file for parentage). SO! I grabbed some hair bulbs from her to see what she carries! The grulla filly by her side is her 2008 Arab/Sulphur cross. I was very pleased to see that the Spanish genetics really overran the Arab genes in this foal! Sulphur's are not known to have the ability to flag their tail or have a dish or round eyes. That is about what this filly got from her Arab sire from what I can tell. And of course the hooked ears. Anyways, here is a video I just uploaded of Sulphur's Arista: www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_Nl-YeURNAAnd for all of us dun factor crazy people, here is Sulphur's Anhur Maximus: www.youtube.com/watch?v=taeD5ufeSIU

So Sponenberg saw this horse and said it was a claybank?

No, but this matches the description that Dr. Sponenberg had said is a claybank. The horse is suppose to look like a creamy version of a red dun. Like it rolled in red clay. I had discussed the whole claybank thing many years ago with Dr. Sponenberg when I was confused with what color was a real claybank.
I would be curious as to what Cali's color genetics would be. I have always believed that she was a claybank as well.

It might be the video quality/lighting, but she just looks dun to me--if she was pale, it didn't show, and the other horse that there was just a glimpse of looked more pale/creamy than her. This horse is what I would say fits that definition: I'd also call that a creamy red dun. More pics: www.outlawsulphurs.com/12.htmlOr, of course, Rojo: The dun factor on that stallion is amazing!

I have seen Arista in person years back, when Erin owned her. she is probably the most beautiful mare, of any breed. I have ever seen. and Kim is right, she does indeed fit the Sponenberg description of claybank. But, Dianne, so did Dani, and Calista. I called them Apricot dun.
Kim J, where is Arista now?? I am on dial up and cannot do the youtube thing....so couldn't view your videos. If you would email me privately I would like to talk to you about arista a little more!! KimK

I am not a horse expert, but have been a lifetime horse owner and enthusiast, and in all those years I think I have only seen one horse I would call a claybank . It was a QH . This is a pic of what it looked like: It is distinctly different looking than other red duns, almost whitish-pink in good light, with red points. If you do a google image search for claybank though, you will see that every shade of red dun gets called claybank. It is hard to capture a color in words. I remember as a kid trying to understand how grulla was different than gray. It wasn't til I saw some, close up, that I got it. I also have used the term apricot dun for pale red duns, like Lisa D's Dani. I don't know if that is a real term? or maybe QH lingo? Lil

Lil, That's what I call my mare, an apricot dun.

Thanks for the pictures of Artisa, the video made her look more like a dun. I've never seen that pale of a red dun with that dark of mane. Very interesting, and very pretty girl.

I hate that pic of Arista... Those pics of her just seriously do not do her justice AT ALL!! When I originally saw her photos I was really not impressed, but in person... just WOW! When I get back "home" (not really... I have never considered Colorado my home... I am a southern California girl at heart. Born and raised!) I will upload some more video. I know this is a Kiger board, but I think you all would enjoy a gorgeous Spanish stud doing a rear on command with his head arched and his front legs waving in the air I got to finally film Mestene's Pueblo today. He is the sire of Sulphur's Anhur Maximus. I think Victoria has a date with a Pueblo next year! LOL He is just GORGEOUS!! I am also gonna have to eventually convince the owner of Arista to part with her. Such a nice mare! Arista is very pale, but her coat is red. I can't wait to see what her color genetics turn out to be. I will probably mail the hair out on Tuesday. That will be my first day of the last quarter for vet tech school!! It will also be the quarter I get to participate in surgery! Very excited! I plan on going to a state uni for vet school. Here is a better pic of Sulphur's Musica. Person in the pic is of yours truly. She is a really pretty claybank.

Has Musica been color tested? Do you remember the color of their eyes? There does seem to be a gene that hasn't been identified yet that makes the overall body color very light. Like an Isabella palomino... the lightness is inherited. Or very dark, like a dark palomino.

I do not believe so. Naylene Nield now owns her. With Naylene owning her, the likelihood of her being DNA tested for anything is slim to none.
Arista's eyes are brown I believe. I think I got a close up of her eyes in the video. Will have to watch it again.

I think you might be right Dianne. That the lightness is inherited and that they haven't found the gene yet that makes them light. With the DNA testing of Arista, we shall see if there is cream in there. There is such a thing as palomino Sulphurs, so Sulphurs do carry cream. Kigers I don't think have been found with cream yet, so even if Arista did carry cream, I don't think that it would explain the pale color of Cali and others that are claybanks in the Kiger breed unless a genetic test is done on them and perhaps they carry cream as well? I don't know. We will see what Arista's genetic report says! I am excited about that!

Still waiting on the results of Arista's color genetics. However, as promised, here is Mestene's Pueblo. The gorgeous purebred Spanish Sulphur stallion that loves to rear on command! www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5Va8GNqHaw

Excuse for my forgetting, but Pueblo is in fact trained to rare on command. Unfortunately, there was no one there to catch him on film being ridden. So, him just running freely in his small pin will have to do for now.
